The food shelf offers various programs to fight hunger and nourish our community

Food Shelf Programs.

  • Backpack Food Program

Through funding by the United Way and community donations, the Pelican Rapids Food Shelf currently provides nutritious meals to 80 students every week. Teachers identify students that could use these meals and Trinity Lutheran Church packs them.

  • Nutritional Assistance Program for Seniors

Nutrition Assistance Program for seniors (NAPS) is a federal program for people over 60. Program participants are provided a monthly box of food, with an average of 24 boxes provided in Pelican each month.

There is an annual application process, click the button below for information on how to apply.

  • Community Gardening

The Food Shelf has a community Garden on the north side of Pelican. The garden has 37 plots with farm equipment and a farm incubator program available. “Growing Together” we share the work and share the harvest. There is plan to also plant an apple orchard at the garden.

Click the button below for contact information about the garden.

  • Weekly Farmers Market

Local gardeners donate excess garden produce to the food shelf, that is made available for our participants from July through October. Participants are encouraged to come weekly for fresh produce!

  • Fresh Green Bucks

Look for “Fresh Green Bucks” at the Larry’s Supermarket checkout! The value of each voucher purchased is deposited into the food shelf account. The food shelf uses these funds to purchase fresh and frozen foods for the shelf!
